Roverandom – J. R. R. Tolkien
Roverandom is a sweet fantasy work originally written to console Tolkien’s young son who had just lost his favorite toy – a black and white tin dog figure – after a day at the beach. The story begins with a real dog named Rover who is changed into a toy after biting a wizard on the leg.
The unfortunate toy/dog is lost on the beach and is sent on a trip to the moon by a second, more kindly wizard to prevent the first wizard from doing him even more harm. On the moon he encounters, among other marvels, a moon dog also named Rover, a dragon, and of course, the Man In The Moon who lives in a tall white castle. His name is changed to Roverandom by the moon dog who claims squatter’s rights to the original name.
After the bad wizard is rendered relatively harmless by virtue of his marriage to a mermaid, Roverandom is returned to earth where once again he runs afoul of the bad wizard, this time at the bottom of the sea.
I rate this book 5 stars.
