Anne Frank’s – The Diary Of A Young Girl – The Definitive Edition

I just finished reading Anne Frank’s “The Diary Of A Young Girl” for the second time. I read it many years ago, but this time I had the unedited version containing a lot of things her father omitted in the “original”. It’s hard reading about her hopes and dreams for the future knowing in advance that none of it will ever come to fruition.

Anne is a typical teenage girl; can’t get along with her mother, feels misunderstood by her father, resents her ever-so-perfect older sister, complains about the meddling neighbor lady. She studies hard and dreams of a career a a writer. She is very open and frank, almost to excess, and it’s easy to see why her father deemed some material inappropriate for young readers. However, in today’s more open society, her musings hardly seem shocking.

One can feel her frustration at their isolation and her longing to get outside and feel the spring breeze and the sun on her face. She listens to news reports about the war and hears local news and gossip from the few people who visit and bring them supplies. Through it all she never loses hope, even her very last entry speaks of her optimism and her plans for the future.
